Avoid Going Extinct – Embrace Evolutionary Leadership in 2025
Adding to the plethora of leadership styles, Evolutionary Leadership is a recent and compelling addition. Read on with a Growth Mindset and consider embracing the Evolutionary Leadership’s key principles and ethos in 2025. Your people and business will benefit greatly.
For leadership purposes, common definitions of “evolution” include changing into a different and usually better form, process, or outcome. This leadership style supports the adage – adapt or go extinct.
An Evolutionary Leadership style organically augments other styles such as servant, democratic, transformational, and coaching, to name but a few. Evolutionary leaders are naturally people-first leaders. They understand business fundamental #1 – take care of your people and they will take care of your business.
The following Evolutionary Leadership principles, values, and skills, while not exhaustive, promise to create a “we” culture, and deliver amazing value to your customers:
- Committed to the continuous growth and evolution of themselves and those around them. Evolutionary leadership is less about what you do, and more about who you are/are becoming. Universally, these leaders pursue an ongoing commitment to a meditation or spiritual practice. Evolutionary leadership is nearly synonymous with conscious leadership; a commitment to continually expand consciousness in service to the whole.
- Fanatically believe that none of us is as smart as all of us. Evolutionary leaders deeply grasp that business complexity outstrips any individual’s (or clique’s) ability to comprehend, innovate, and adapt. In partnership with their people, evolutionary leaders create nimble processes for a team-oriented, continuous improvement culture. Heroes are not welcome and need not apply.
- Apply transformation pressure. “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” This quote, attributed to Peter Drucker, best captures an evolutionary leader’s relentless quest for adapting and creating new business paradigms. Think Uber or Airbnb. I humbly admit I thought these concepts wouldn’t make a dollar when they first came to market.
- Are amazing listeners. Evolutionary leaders make regular time to listen to a broad range of stakeholders’ concerns and ideas. These leaders check their egos at the door to maintain a pulse on the organization. Their people feel heard, understood, and valued, and in turn give back discretionary effort.
Evolutionary leaders have great self-awareness and are humble. Their ability to motivate and influence others comes from their authenticity, not their position. They model accepting full responsibility for their mistakes, fostering cultures high in psychological safety, which is correlated with strong business performance.
Embracing an Evolutionary Leadership style in 2025 will not only help you avoid business extinction but will motivate and inspire your people to love you, their work, and your customers. Spread the love.
